WANT MORE THAN
JUST A STALE CURRICULUM?

insights from a former insider...

Did you know?

  • MOST PEOPLE TEACH THE WAY THEY WERE TAUGHT.
I've been in the trenches and witnessed this from colleagues never changing or adjusting their methods or coursework over decades! I've also witnessed the pain of young people who are subjected to poor methods or approaches by their M.S. or H.S. teachers who don't know any other methods of instruction beyond how they were taught. I've audited classes that ended up being tortuous in witnessing the failings of long-time faculty (some boring, some frankly unable to 'read the room'.) There are definitely exceptions in unexpected places, but it's hard to determine as an outsider. As your coach mentor, I have worked diligently to hone my craft as an educator over more than 20 years finally leaving the walls of academia to work with people beyond those barriers.

  • MANY TRADITIONAL PROGRAMS AT THE COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY LEVEL ARE STILL GROUNDED IN A MODERNIST APPROACH IN A POSTMODERN WORLD & RAPIDLY CHANGING TECHNOLOGICAL WORLD.
Large institutions are slow to adapt to the rapidly changing world. Faculty members safe in their positions most often are disconnected from the professional world and have no urgency to change their curriculum or methods because students keep enrolling. Many graphic design programs are housed in art departments who still have faculty that learned their craft in a bygone era and may be using outmoded and irrelevant materials or projects in their coursework because there's no incentive to change. Programs and coursework become stale.

  • CURRICULUM IN INSTITUTIONS TAKES A LONG TIME TO CHANGE DUE TO THE INTERNAL SYSTEMS, CHECKS AND BALANCES OFTEN TIMES THROUGH AN APPROVAL PROCESS THAT INCLUDES MAJORITY NON-DESIGNER FACULTY.
If you are looking at a GD program at a state or private school, it's important to evaluate the course curriculum, course descriptions, and even the type of faculty assigned to teach various courses. To save money, many institutions have eliminated tenure-track faculty relying more on temporary workers who may not have the same quality of teaching experience. A curricular change process can take more than a year or two to move it's way through committees, explanations, reports, and other bureaucratic obstacles.

  • RECEIVING A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN GRAPHIC DESIGN IS STILL LESS THAN 1/3 OF THE COURSEWORK YOU ARE PAYING FOR TO RECEIVE A 4- YEAR DEGREE. THE PROGRAM THAT I HAVE DEVELOPED CONDENSES THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF A CURRICULUM INCLUDING 10 CLASSES (that on average costs 25k) INTO 5 COURSES. To receive a Bachelor's degree you need 120 credits which is 40 classes if all are 3 credits. Students are required to take 15 credits or 5 classes per term, 30 credits per year for the 4 years. A degree in Graphic Design usually has about 10, possibly 12 required courses in the discipline. That could equite to one year's worth of tuition anywhere between $25,000 & $55,000 if you are not attending a state school.

  • THERE ARE OTHER METHODS OF RECEIVING VALID AND VALUABLE COURSEWORK BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL OPTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION.
There is a movement to find alternative learning environments as technology provides access to a variety of options. Val's program is one of many, but it is developed over the more than 2 decades of experience and includes one-on-one mentorship that you may not find in other online packages or d.i.y. options.

5 COURSE PACKAGE

I have developed this program based on years of teaching, innovating, and designing curriculum. In fact, trying to make innovative updates while teaching at a University was met with so many obstacles and resistance all the way up the chain to the highest administration who do not understand any aspect of the subject or field of graphic design, which is why I resigned in 2018.

LET'S DO THE MATH:

ONE COLLEGE COURSE on average = $750-3,500

WHAT ARE THE POLICIES & PROCEDURES?

Your purchase of one course or a course sequence package is non-refundable. It is the student's responsibility to follow the instructions and sequence of individual aspects of each course. The package for the mentorship relationship includes approximately 45 minutes per week interactions including scheduling video conferences and written or audio feedback on submissions of progress and final artifacts. There are no grades or certificates associated with this program, but with this work one can create a solid portfolio (as one of the courses) to showcase your skills.

Traditional courses are set up for about 15 weeks of work. This can be condensed depending on your other obligations and most likely be trimmed down to 6 - 8 weeks. It's important not to rush. A 5 course sequence most definitely could be accomplished within a year. The student and Val work together on creating a plan timeline. If there are extenuating circumstances to completing the work in a timely manner, student and guardian/parent must make a request in writing to extend the eligibility length of the program for up to two years from the start date of the current course.

After completing booking, you'll receive access to the first in the sequence and set up a regular schedule for appointments that are available during weekdays and weekends with optional times in the morning, afternoons, early evenings based on demand.

If you prefer to start with a consultation to get more information before booking, please complete this form without choosing a payment option.
